Two months after scrapping a planned exhibition centred on John Galliano following public outcry, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a dramatically different theme for the 2027 Met Gala. Next May's Costume Institute exhibition will be titled "ExtraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday" and will examine the craft behind the humble garments most people wear every day.

The show will spotlight jeans, T-shirts, and other wardrobe staples, alongside designs made from common materials such as paper and plastic. It will also feature work by luxury designers who have reinterpreted everyday pieces, including a leather biker jacket by Junya Watanabe, puffer-coat ball gowns by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Moncler, and the trompe-l'oeil denim looks that Matthieu Blazy created during his time at Bottega Veneta.

## From controversy to a quieter concept

The new theme replaces a previously planned retrospective on John Galliano, whose history of antisemitic remarks made him a divisive choice for fashion's biggest annual event. The Costume Institute's lead curator, Andrew Bolton, told journalists he "didn't have a plan B" when the Galliano show was cancelled.

"It was really important to come up with an exhibition that was just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily," Bolton said. "I wanted it to be as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John show would have been."

The exhibition will include around 230 pieces, many drawn from the museum's own collection. Bolton described the theme as an extension of this year's "Costume Art" exhibition, which focused on how clothes are worn rather than how they are designed.

## Anna Wintour was not involved in the switch

According to the New York Times, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has long chaired the Met Gala, was not part of the selection process for the replacement theme. That detail sets the exhibition apart from the usual close collaboration between the museum and Wintour's team.

The official dress code for the gala's red carpet has not yet been announced, but Bolton said he hoped visitors might come in their own jeans and favourite T-shirts. For an event famous for elaborate gowns and painstaking styling, that suggestion hints at a very different kind of evening.

## What casual could mean for the red carpet

A dress-down Met Gala might sound like a contradiction, but it could produce some of the most interesting red-carpet moments in years. The gala began in 1948 as a relatively intimate fundraiser and only grew into the heavily produced spectacle it is today. A return to simpler clothes, interpreted by the world's most creative designers and stylists, could make next year's event feel unexpectedly fresh.

At the 2026 Met Gala, model Bhavitha Mandava caused a stir by wearing Chanel jeans and a half-zip sweater that many critics found too casual. In hindsight, she may have simply been early. Her look now reads like a preview of the theme that would be announced months later.

## The larger message

Bolton's statement that "the ordinary is never quite as simple as it seems" captures the exhibition's central idea. Everyday clothes carry social, cultural, and personal meaning. By placing them in a museum setting, the show asks visitors to look again at what they wear and why.

For the fashion industry, the theme also offers a moment of relief after a difficult year. The Galliano controversy had put the Met Gala in an uncomfortable position. The new exhibition, focused on accessibility and familiarity, gives the 2027 event a cleaner narrative and a broader point of entry for the public.
