Watching that shape his life became the starting point for nearly everything she has since built, from a small local scholarship fund to a literacy program now operating on three continents. ## From a hometown dropout program to a global book drive The giving started close to home. In 1988, Parton launched the Dollywood Foundation to cut down on high school dropout rates in her home county, offering seventh and eighth graders a small cash incentive to finish school. That effort eventually grew into her best known program, the Imagination Library, which mails a free book every month to enrolled children from birth to age five. What began as a local initiative now reaches children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia, sending out more than three million books a month and over two hundred and seventy million since it started. ## Giving that goes well beyond books Parton's philanthropy has stretched into medicine, education, and disaster relief as well. She helped fund a women's health center at a Tennessee medical center, covered full college tuition for thousands of Dollywood employees, and personally donated millions toward pediatric research. When wildfires hit her home region in 2016, she raised over ten million dollars for victims and added close to nine million of her own money on top of it, later doing the same for flood relief in 2021.
